I ditched my yoga studio membership a few weeks ago and joined a real gym. I'd been bored with yoga for quite some time but did not want to leave the relative comfort of my yoga studio. It is my home away from home. I love my instructors (Katrina & Tom) but the space just didn't feel right anymore. The studio owners are leaning less towards yoga and pushing laser hair removal. That just doesn't gel with me.
With all of the body awareness I gained in three years of practice, I wanted to challenge myself and build up my overall health regimine. I'm heading towards middle age and want to do as much preventative measures as possible so I don't get stuck with huge retirement-savings-eating medical bills.
I also have a resting heart rate of 100 to 105 and, while that doesn't raise an eyebrow with the medical professionals I see, it scares the hell out of me.
So, I joined a gym and it has been a complete shock to the system. After two weeks of solid, almost daily work-outs, I went in for my free fitness assessment. It was the first one I have ever had and I was curious. Just how bad was my previously completely sedentary lifestyle? I was 27 when I took my first yoga lession. Before that, nothing.
I found out that I am a wreck with poor posture, no back muscles and 38.5% body fat. That's right!! You may not know if from looking at me but I am in the extreme danger zone for obesity. Any worse and I'd require a doctor's note to attend the gym.
So, there you go. This is my next big goal in life - get healthier.
I'll keep you posted.
