Ayyam'i'Ha Celebration in Frisco

Saturday was the annual Ayyam'i'Ha (sounds like Yamaha but not really) celebration in downtown Frisco. The Bahai community of Plano and Frisco hosts it and I must say it is one of my favorite nights of the year. People from all walks of life gather to celebrate service to the community and the basic need for peace on earth - a main tenet of the Bahai religion. I meet Persians, Jews, Asians, Christians, Yuppies, Yankees and any number of different backgrounds while chowing down on a huge potluck supper buffet. The Bahais and their guests go all out with the food and I'm telling you it is the best ticket in town. Randy's Steakhouse across the street from our little gathering place could only hope to have as much atmosphere and culinary sophistication.

The event was held at the Frisco Chamber of Commerce building. They rent out their space and they have a decent sized, well-stocked kitchen. I go a little early every year to help set up and then "work" the party by serving drinks, making sure the buffet line is well laid out and, basically, put all that stuff I've learned on The Food Network to good use. But really I'm just making myself busy so no one will notice I have poor social skills and couldn't mingle my way out of a paper bag. Yes, I was the girl who went to all the high school dances excited to serve the punch.

Anyway, The Bab would be proud. People from all walks of life came together in peace to eat and get to know one another. If you want to hang out with a great group of people - check out their activities at the Bahais of Plano Web site or look for multifaith activites with the Frisco Multifaith group.

Are you planning on doing this again this year? The Baha'i World News Service (www.news.bahai.org) is looking for interesting Ayyam-i-Ha stories.
