What I Did On My Summer Vacation - The Ship and Leaving Port

The ship was big. I cannot put into words how big it was because I have nothing to compare it to. Once on board, it ship magically turns into a pint-sized little town with cubby holes for all 2,600 people. Our stateroom was small (about the size of my closet) but so well designed we didn't feel cramped at all. We quickly got to our rooms, unpacked, freshened up and went out for a little exploring. We ran all around the decks little toddlers on a gummi bear high - from the very top of the ship, the stores, all the restuarants, clubs, etc. We finally settled in the grill where the buffet was in full swing. Bill bought us fountain cards for the duration of our trip and we ate until it was time to muster.

The muster drill took about eleven seconds and we didn't get to do much since it was raining outside. I don't think they want you to really muster if it is raining due to potential risks of a slippery deck.

Then it was time to set sail. I'm a sucker for machinery, engineering, big boats, planes, space shuttles - you name it. Bill and I are avid watchers of that Modern Marvels show on cable. So, pulling away from the pier, watching the pilot boat, going past the docks with the big commercial ships and all that jazz was one of the highlights of the voyage. I stayed at the railings for at least two hours watching all the industry and port traffic go by while our liner manuveoured out to the open sea. Bill got a little bored and I secretly thinks I'm a little weird for enjoying the view of a oil drilling platform but... hey, it could be worse.

We went to dinner and were pleasantly surprised - our shall I say relieved? - to find our seatmates thoroughly enjoyable. We were with three other couples. The talk was pleasant the whole trip.

More later...
